Machinist/Fabricator/Welder

 

Position Purpose:

Support the facility by fabricating parts for machinery and completing fabrication projects that may require Machining, Mechanical, Welding and other Maintenance and Engineering Skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to set up and operate machine tools for making experimental or mass produced machine parts. Machine tools required to operate would include, but not be limited to, lathes, drill presses, vertical and horizontal milling machines, band saw, arbor press, bench grinder, belt sander, surface grinder and other tools as may be required for making such parts. Should be comfortable in working with tolerances of .001 inch.
  • Weld and fabricate various parts using MIG, TIG, and stick welders, cutting torches, and plasma cutters
  • Interpret blueprints and work instructions to complete tasks accurately
  • Measure dimensions using precision instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers)
  • Ability to operate machinery and perform machining tasks preferred
  • Familiarity with materials handling and crane operations
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and maintain a clean work environment
  • Collaborate with machinists, fabricators, engineers, and technicians to solve problems

 

Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities in the Machinist Trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the machinist trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the machining qualities, properties, and uses of various metals such as aluminum, brass, steel, and cast iron.
  • Considerable skill in the operation of machine tools and the use of precision measuring devices.
  • Ability to apply machinist craft techniques, processes, and principles.
  • Ability to apply shop mathematics to practical problems such as computing dimensions, laying out work, and setting up machine tools.
  • Ability to read and work from sketches, specifications, and blueprints. Ability to determine work priorities and assist others with work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Proficient at reading and interpreting blueprints.
  • Understands and can perform geometry and tool wear offsets.
  • Properly identifies use of inserts, grades, chip formers, fixtures, and tooling.
  • Uses gages and measuring instruments to meet tolerances requirements.
  • Perform tool changes.
  • Produces conventional machined milled parts.
  • Understands tooling to accurate tolerances utilizing good shop practices.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, design schematics, and CAD drawings.
  • Visualizing and computing metal shapes and tolerances.
  • Designing jigs and templates as work aids in the fabrication of parts.
  • Measuring and marking metal stock for machining.
  • Setting up machine tools such as drills, lathes, grinders, and milling machines.
  • Cutting and shaping blocks to specified dimensions.
  • Performs mechanical repairs on equipment from hydraulic, pneumatic, etc..
  • Dismantle, inspect and replace mechanical parts
  • Examine work orders and converse with equipment operators to detect equipment problems whether electrical or mechanical.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks such as checking, cleaning, or repairing equipment to detect and prevent problems.
  • Calibrate testing instruments and installed or repaired equipment to prescribed specifications.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks as recommended by the manufacture and or the facility's historical data.
  •  Weld and fabricate various parts using MIG, TIG, and stick welders, cutting torches, and plasma cutters
  • Other skills that are applied include the use of a shear, press brake, core drill, painting, etc.
  • Knowledge of A/C & D/C motor drives, installation and start-up
  • Knowledge of ARC FLASH & LOTO procedures instructed by OSHA & NEC CODE

Other Functions:

  • Install, PM and repair of dock doors, locks, levelers, chocks, lights, etc.
  • Install, PM and repair of facility lights, fixtures, ballast, etc.
  • Install, PM and repair of facility plumbing such as sinks, toilets, faucets, ice machines, garbage disposals, etc.
  • Install, PM and repair of various plant equipment such as bailers, cardboard conveyors, heat seal machines, pallet jacks, etc.
  • To safely and effectively use and maintain facility and Maintenance Department vehicles such as the pickup truck, dump truck, loader, scissor lifts, boom lifts, fork lifts, etc.
  • To assist as needed in the VSC Lift Truck and Battery program. Such as general maintenance for any lift vehicles, towing disabled or stuck vehicles, changing and watering batteries, maintaining battery changing equipment, etc.
  • Assembly, repair or relocation of office furniture and equipment.
  • Responsible for plant snow and ice removal.
  • PM, and repair of snow removal equipment.

  • Education:

  • 2 year Degree:  A.A.S or A.E. in Maintenance or Engineering related field, or Certificates related to Machining Parts, Fabrication and Welding, preferred but sufficient experience can be substituted.
  • Experience:

  • 2 years’ experience fabricating Parts in a Machine Shop Operation, preferred.
